Shanghai Dragons Sign Forward Givani Smith to One-Year Contract

The Shanghai Dragons have signed 28-year-old Canadian forward Givani Smith to a one-year contract.

Smith spent last season in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves, who reached the Calder Cup Final. Over his AHL career, he has played 203 games, recording 62 points on 29 goals and 33 assists.

The forward also brings NHL experience to Shanghai, having appeared in 168 games with the Detroit Red Wings, Florida Panthers, San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche. In the NHL, Smith has registered 22 points on nine goals and 13 assists.

“Givani Smith is a classic power forward who can push through opposing defenses, protect the front of our own net and give his teammates confidence by standing up for them throughout the game,” said Evgeny Artyukhin, general manager of the Shanghai Dragons. “With his size, Smith can not only break up opposing attacks, but also support the team offensively by working around the crease. He battles until the end every shift. He is a true warrior on the ice, and that is exactly the kind of player our club needs.”

With the signing, Shanghai adds a physical, hard-nosed forward with NHL experience, net-front presence and the ability to bring energy and protection to the lineup.
