Shanghai Dragons Sign Defenseman Turner Ottenbreit to One-Year Contract

The Shanghai Dragons have signed Canadian defenseman Turner Ottenbreit to a one-year contract.

Ottenbreit is no stranger to the KHL, having played the 2023–24 season with Kunlun Red Star. He appeared in 64 games, recording eight points on one goal and seven assists, while delivering 110 hits and blocking 103 shots. He led the team in both categories and ranked among the top 10 KHL defensemen in hits during the regular season.

Before and after his stint in the KHL, Ottenbreit spent seven seasons in the AHL, appearing in 294 games and recording 57 points on 15 goals and 42 assists. Last season, he played for the Calgary Wranglers, collecting 13 points on three goals and 10 assists in 57 games.

“Turner is a big, defense-first blueliner who already knows this league,” said Evgeny Artyukhin, general manager of the Shanghai Dragons. “He is very effective in front of his own net and enjoys playing a physical game. During the 2023–24 season, he led his team in both hits and blocked shots, and ranked among the top 10 KHL defensemen in hits. He moves the puck well, can make the first pass, but most importantly, he is a true team player. He stands up for his teammates, has a competitive edge and battles until the final whistle.”

With the signing, Shanghai adds a proven KHL defenseman who brings size, physicality and reliability to the blue line, while strengthening the club’s defensive identity.
