"The Next Month Is All About Coming Together as a Team." Dragons Open Training Camp with Medical Evaluations
The Shanghai Dragons officially kicked off preparations for the new season with annual medical evaluations, the first step before hitting the ice for training camp. The medical staff and coaching group gathered key baseline information that will be complemented by physical testing in the coming days. Here’s what several Dragons players had to say as camp got underway.
Riley Sutter, Forward:
— There are a lot of new faces in the locker room, so it’s a fresh start for everyone. Last season didn’t go the way we wanted, and I think we’re all excited to get back to work and start playing hockey again.
The biggest thing right now is getting to know each other. We’ve added a lot of new players, and the next month will give us a chance to build chemistry and become a real team. As far as I know, the Dragons haven’t made the playoffs since 2018, so that’s where our focus is. Our first goal is to earn a playoff spot. After that, we want to see how far we can go. That’s the mindset we’re bringing into this season.
Pavel Khomchenko, Goaltender:
— The team has changed a lot, and I believe we’ve become stronger. Everything came together pretty quickly during the negotiations, and I felt this was the right opportunity for me. It’s a great organization, and I’m excited to be here.
Vyacheslav Buteyets, Goaltender:
— For me, it’s about proving myself every day. This will be my first full season in the KHL, so my goal is to play my best hockey and take advantage of every opportunity.
Nikita Popugayev, Forward:
— The objective is clear. We need to come together as a team and get off to a good start. Hopefully, that starts with a win.
