Givani Smith: “I Can’t Wait to Get to Work and Start Winning”

Another new face has arrived in St. Petersburg, as Givani Smith touched down in the city overnight.

We caught up with the Dragons forward to talk about his move to the KHL, the familiar faces waiting for him in the Shanghai locker room, and what it will take to adjust to a new league.

— I feel great. The trip was long, so I’m really happy I’ve finally arrived and I’m here now.

I know quite a bit about the KHL — about some of the teams and players. I’ve talked to guys who used to play here and then moved to North America, and I asked them a lot about the league. I also know a few players from the Shanghai Dragons — including through my brother. So I already have a certain understanding of the team and the league.

From what I know about our team, I think we’re going to have a very strong roster this season. That’s why I’m really excited to get to work as soon as possible and start winning games.

— One of the factors in choosing Shanghai was that there are a lot of North American players here. Everyone told me it would make the adjustment easier and help me feel more comfortable.

I also have a lot of Russian friends, and they told me a lot about the KHL — about strong teams, a high level of hockey, and the chance to play in front of great fans. That made me want to come here and experience it all myself.

— To the fans, I just want to say: I’m really excited to meet all of you soon. I can’t wait to step on the ice and play in front of you. I’m really looking forward to getting started!
