Dragons Take a Point, Fall 3-2 in OT to Dynamo Moscow
MOSCOW — The Shanghai Dragons extended their road trip on September 22 with a hard-fought matchup against Dynamo Moscow at the VTB Arena, ultimately falling 3-2 in overtime. Despite the loss, the Dragons left the ice with a valuable point, showcasing resilience and high-intensity play against one of the league’s top squads.
Dragons Start Fast
Shanghai opened the game aggressively, pushing play deep into Dynamo’s zone and generating early scoring chances. However, Dynamo quickly regained possession, probing the Dragons’ defense and creating traffic in front of Patrik Rybar. At 10:27, Paquette capitalized on a faceoff circle shot into the near corner to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

Suсese Breaks the Drought
The Dragons responded almost immediately. Earning a power play, they converted quickly as Nate Sucese redirected a feed from Clendening on the doorstep for 1-1 at 12:20. Less than a minute later, Kuznetsov collected a rebound off a quick breakout to put Shanghai ahead, 2-1, before a pair of penalties left the Dragons shorthanded. Dynamo’s Gusev found Sikura on the far post, leveling the score at 2-2.
Midgame Battles and Narrow Misses
The second period saw both teams trading dangerous chances. Shanghai earned a brief 5-on-3 advantage but could not convert, despite generating multiple quality shots on Motorygin. Speeds increased as attacks intensified in both directions. Dynamo struck the post, while Shanghai’s Rielly came close to scoring on a rush. Despite dominating in shots on goal and faceoffs, the score remained tied heading into the third.

Tight Defensive Play Into OT
The Dragons played with discipline in the third, with Rybar standing tall against multiple one-on-one opportunities, including a key save against Sharakanov. Shanghai countered with solid shifts and varied shot attempts, keeping Dynamo honest, but neither team could find the back of the net, setting the stage for overtime.
Overtime Drama
Extra time opened with end-to-end action. Merkley and Spooner had early chances, but Motorygin denied both. Dynamo eventually created a high-danger opportunity on the rush, and Jordan Will executed a precise finish to win it for the hosts 3-2 OT, handing the Dragons their second straight overtime loss on the trip.
Next Up: Shanghai Dragons travel to Tolyatti to face Lada on September 26.
