Missed Chances Cost Dragons in Omsk Loss

The Shanghai Dragons created plenty of opportunities but couldn’t convert them, falling 6–1 to Avangard Omsk on March 13 at G-Drive Arena.

Shanghai made just one change to the lineup ahead of the game: Omsk native Rasskazov replaced Kablukov on the fourth line, giving the local product a chance to play in front of his hometown crowd. Tikhomirov started in goal.

Strong start, unfortunate deficit

The Dragons opened the game with energy and looked more than competitive against one of the league’s top teams. For much of the first period, Shanghai arguably carried the better of the play.

The forwards transitioned quickly through the neutral zone and wasted no time getting pucks on net. In their own end, all five skaters supported Tikhomirov, who delivered several excellent stops.

Two of the best chances came while shorthanded. Spencer Foo and later Wagner each broke in alone on Sergei Serebryakov, but the Avangard goaltender came up big both times.

Moments later, the momentum flipped. Nail Yakupov converted from the slot on the power play at 14:17, giving the home side a 1–0 lead heading into the second period.

Avangard extends the lead

The Dragons had a golden opportunity early in the second period when they received a lengthy 5-on-3 advantage. However, the equalizer never came. Quinney had perhaps the best chance at the top of the crease but fired high.

At 33:13, a turnover in the neutral zone led to Prokhorkin’s goal, doubling the lead. The Hawks quickly added another when Vyacheslav Voynov blasted a shot from the slot at 36:22 to make it 3–0.

One goal back, but too late

Omsk shifted into a more controlled style in the third period, disrupting Shanghai’s attempts to generate sustained pressure.

At 48:33, McLeod stole the puck behind the Dragons’ net and set up Fiore for a goal that stretched the lead to 4–0. Shanghai challenged the play for offside but the goal stood.

The Dragons finally broke through when Labanc hammered a slap shot past Serebryakov at 50:43, trimming the deficit to 4–1.

But the game quickly slipped away. A wave of penalties left Shanghai short-handed repeatedly, and McLeod capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play at 51:20. Later, Okulov added another with the man advantage to close the scoring.

Shanghai now continues its road trip March 15 against Salavat Yulaev Ufa.
