Comeback In Moscow! Dragons Erase Three-goal Deficit, Score Seven Straight To Beat Torpedo

The Shanghai Dragons turned a nightmare start into a statement win Saturday, erasing a three-goal deficit and scoring seven unanswered goals to defeat Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 7–3 in their second game of the Moscow Mayor’s Cup.

Torpedo used the game to take a closer look at several players from its extended roster, while Shanghai also rested a number of key players, including Dmitrij Jaskin, Nic Petan and Brennan Menell. Defenseman Calen Addison made his Dragons debut, while Pavel Khomchenko got the start in net.

Torpedo Jumps Out to 3–0 Lead

The opening period belonged to Torpedo.

Viktor Fyodorov needed just 1:17 to open the scoring, beating Khomchenko with Torpedo’s first shot of the game from medium range.

Fyodorov struck again at 8:23, this time finding room inside the near post to make it 2–0.

Shanghai responded with sustained offensive-zone possession and created several quality looks of its own, but Torpedo goaltender Dmitry Shugayev came up with the saves when needed.

At 12:58, Torpedo added another. Artyom Matyuk finished a setup from Sergei Skvortsov and Ivan Chesnokov, sending Shanghai into the first intermission facing a 3–0 deficit.

Then everything changed.

Four Goals in One Period Turn the Game Around

The Dragons opened the second period on the power play — and needed just 28 seconds to capitalize.

Brett Murray and Addison worked the puck to David Chen in the faceoff circle, and the defenseman fired it home for his first goal of the preseason. Addison picked up an assist in his first game with Shanghai.

There was still plenty of time left to turn the game around. As it turned out, the Dragons needed less than 10 minutes.

At 25:40, Stepan Khripunov cut the deficit to one, converting a setup from Givani Smith and Yegor Solovyov.

Then came the equalizer.

With Shanghai back on the power play, Vladislav Barulin finished a sequence from Addison and Chen at 29:07 to erase what had once been a three-goal Torpedo advantage.

Just 50 seconds later, the comeback was complete.

Takhir Mingachyov struck unassisted at 29:57, giving the Dragons their fourth consecutive goal and their first lead of the afternoon.

Torpedo called timeout in an attempt to stop the momentum.

It didn’t work.

Dragons Keep Pouring It On

Shanghai remained in complete control in the third.

Rather than sitting on the one-goal lead, the Dragons continued to attack — and their shooters began picking corners.

At 44:39, Yegor Solovyov ripped a wrist shot past Shugayev to make it 5–3.

Less than two minutes later, Barulin struck again, finishing a feed from Mikhail Kotlyarevsky for his second goal of the game and extending Shanghai’s advantage to three.

That was enough for Torpedo to make a change in net, with Sabitov replacing Shugayev at 46:27.

But by then, the Dragons were firmly in control.

Torpedo took a five-minute major late in regulation, and while Shanghai couldn’t convert on the extended power play, the seventh goal still arrived at even strength.

At 57:48, Turner Ottenbreit fired through traffic from the blue line, with Mikhail Naumenkov and Smith picking up the assists.

From 0–3 to 7–3.

Seven unanswered goals, four different lines contributing offensively and a complete turnaround after the first intermission gave Shanghai another preseason victory in Moscow.

The Dragons will close out the Moscow Mayor’s Cup on Sunday, with their opponent and game time to be determined.
